I guess Alex had done the same many times before when meeting someone new, desperately trying to prove he was cool enough. When he showed up, Alex put on his tough-guy act, maybe in an effort to impress Mike. Mike invited him over to the studio right away, opting to put the cameras on tripods and conducting the audition by himself after hours.
